When counselor uses reflection, he/she accurately describes the client’s affective state from either verbal or non-verbal cues. Reflecting is showing the client that he/she has been ‘heard’ not only what is being said, but also what feelings and emotions the client is experiencing when sharing their story with the counselor. By listening for and responding to the feelings of the rather than the content of their statement the counselor communicating and repeating what they have said shows the client they have full attention and that they can accurately sense the world as the client is perceiving it. It also allows the client to make sure that the counselor fully understood them.
